Susan C. Frey

Susan Frey, 83, passed away peacefully at her home on July 26, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.

Susan Carol West was born on April 21, 1943, in Terre Haute, Indiana, to Clyde and Suzanne West. As the oldest of five siblings, she naturally embraced the role of caregiver from an early age - a role that would define her life and touch countless others.

In 1962, Susan earned her practical nursing degree from Indiana University, beginning a lifelong career devoted to caring for others. Whether tending to patients, supporting family, or helping friends, she found joy and purpose in serving others.

Susan was a devoted mother of four whose greatest joy was her family. Her home was a place of warmth and welcome. The candy jar was never empty, and everyone knew they would be greeted with love. She never forgot a birthday, remembering each one with a card or a thoughtful gift.

Christmas was her favorite season. Though she delighted in giving gifts, her family teased her for being the most impatient person in the room when it came time to open presents. She simply could not wait for everyone to unwrap their gifts, her excitement becoming one of the family's most treasured holiday memories.

A gifted crafter, Susan found happiness in creating beautiful things. She spent countless hours needleworking, quilting, crocheting, and knitting. She loved collecting antiques, browsing the aisles of Stein Mart, and listening to country music, especially Willie Nelson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Suzanne West, sister Patty, and beloved grandson, Patrick Hunkler.

Susan is survived by her cherished children, Jennifer Barry (Kevin), Eric Frey II (Cindy), Sarah Frey, and Jonathon Frey; her treasured grandchildren, Sam Auer (Madi), Jess Livinghouse (Ying), Hannah Frey, Zoe Hapenny (Shane), and Emerson Frey; and her adored great-grandchildren, Frances Xin-Livinghouse and Bo Hapenny. She is also survived by friend and caregiver, Katie Wymer, whose compassionate care brought comfort and peace during Susan's final days.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., on Friday, July 31, 2026, at Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home. A funeral ceremony will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, at the funeral home, with Father Bob St. Martin officiating. Susan will be laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery.
