Phyllis Jane Rayburn

Phyllis Jane Rayburn (Boggs) of Terre Haute, Indiana passed away peacefully on September 26, 2026 at the age of 75. She was born on February 28, 1951 in Milan, Indiana to Robert Ward Boggs of Switzerland County, Indiana and Anna Mary Boggs (Counts) of Grahn, Kentucky.

She graduated from Rising Sun High School in Rising Sun, Indiana in 1969. She then attended Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana on an academic scholarship. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English in 1973, among the first in her family to do so.

For a while, her family lived in Holton, Indiana, operating a small restaurant. It was there at Holton High School that she met her future husband, James Lelan Rayburn. After her family moved back to Rising Sun, they reconnected while attending different universities (Purdue and Indiana!) and were engaged at Christmas 1971. They were married on June 10, 1972 at Aberdeen United Methodist Church in Aberdeen, Indiana and enjoyed 54 years of marriage. They moved to Terre Haute, Indiana in 1974 where they raised three children. Beginning in 2006, they resided for a short time in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma before returning to Indiana in 2012.

Phyllis spent many of her working years as a home daycare provider and served on the board of several professional organizations, including 4-C and MADD. She was an active lay volunteer, serving on Christian Education Boards and as a servant to countless children and youth groups, vacation bible schools, and more.

Deeply devoted to her faith, she cherished the church communities and friendships she built over the years. She was an active member of the Terre Haute First Baptist Church and the First United Methodist Church of Broken Arrow. She loved participating in women’s Bible studies and Sunday school groups – especially the Pairs and Spares and Genesis classes in Terre Haute and Explorers class in Broken Arrow. She also faithfully attended Bible Study Fellowship in Oklahoma and Indiana. No matter the time or distance, her friends in Broken Arrow remained dear and supportive throughout her life.

She is survived by her loving husband James and their children: Evan Rayburn, Erin Wineinger (Kristopher Wineinger), and Ethan Rayburn (Danielle Rayburn) – all of Terre Haute. She is additionally survived by eight wonderful grandchildren: Ollie and Elijah Rayburn; Hannah, Emma, and John Wineinger; and James, Andrew, and Lily Rayburn. She was preceded in death by both parents.

The funeral service will be held at Terre Haute First Baptist Church, 4701 East Poplar Drive, Terre Haute, Indiana at 4:30 PM on Thursday, October 1, 2026 preceded by a visitation from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Her final resting place will be at Union Flatrock Cemetery, 9738 Flatrock Road, Osgood, Indiana, preceded by a graveside service at 1:00 PM on Saturday, October 3, 2026.
