John Wesley Smith, 76, of Terre Haute passed away Saturday, March 14, 2026 in the Cobblestone Crossings Health Campus. He was born July 12, 1949 in Terre Haute to Robert Wesley Smith and Marjorie May Huffman Smith.
Survivors include his children, Jacqueline Ann Morse (Brian) and Shawn Wesley Smith (Catherine); grandchildren, Jacob Morse, Riley Morse, and Megan Morse; brother, Timothy Smith (Susan); sisters, Martha Smith and Elizabeth Stevenson (Alan); brother-in-law, Terry Dowell (Anna Lee); sister-in-law, Lynn Dowell; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jo Ann Smith; his parents; sister, Ada Ruth Short; and nephew, Michael Short.
John graduated from Garfield in 1967. He then joined the Navy detached to the Marines and did three tours in Vietnam as a corpsman. John then attended I.S.U. while working at Union Hospital as a respiratory therapist. On December 20, 1971 he married Jo Ann Dowell. John joined the Federal Bureau of Prisons in 1971 as a physician’s assistant and served in Washington State, Lexington, KY and retired from Terre Haute after 33 years. He enjoyed reading and music, watching Notre Dame Football and the Chicago Cubs, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Friday, March 20, 2026 in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street, with Father Bob St. Martin officiating. Visitation will be prior to services from 11:00 A.M. – 1:00 P.M. on Friday. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Vigo County Public Library or the Greater Indiana Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
