Jack Meany, 85, passed away on April 27,2025 at Union Hospital. Jack was born on November 7, 1939, in Port Jervis, New York to John and Dorothy Meany.
He graduated from Delaware Valley High School in Matamoras, Pennsylvania. He held a Bachelor’s degree from East Stroudsburg University and a Master’s degree from the State University of New York at New Paltz. His first career was teaching. He taught American History for 16 years in Port Jervis, New York. Three of his students went on to teach history because of his influence. Later, he entered the newspaper business which ultimately led to his position as publisher of the Leavenworth Times in Leavenworth, Kansas and the Tribune Star in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Jack is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen of 46 years, sons, Stephen (Annabelle) and Matthew (fiancée Mathea) of Denver, Colorado; daughter, Mary (Roger) of Franklin, Indiana; and grandchildren, Timothy, Christina, Tyler, Madison, Mackenzie, Brayden, Logan, Jack, Landon and Ella. Jack was preceded in death by his son, Patrick.
Jack's memberships included the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce (President, 1994), Family Services Association Board of Directors (Secretary 1994-1997), Hoosier Press Association Board of Directors, Wabash Valley United Way Board of Directors, and the Wabash Valley United Way Board of Directors. He was a former member of the Terre Haute Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club of Greater Terre Haute, the Country Club of Terre Haute, Friends of St. Mary of the Woods College (Co-chair 1999-2003), Wabash Chapter Board of Friends at Rose Hulman, and a member of the Presidents Council at Indiana State University. Jack was a member of St. Margaret Mary Church and served on the Parish Council (President 2007-2008). After retirement, Jack spent his time volunteering with Meals on Wheels and the St. Margaret Mary Food Pantry at the Salvation Army. He served on the Terre Haute Deanery Outreach and Service Commission. He also helped establish the 12 Points Northside Brown Bag Project.
Jack was an avid reader. He and Kathleen would come to the dinner table and discuss or disagree what was a good book. On their long trips to Franklin, he would teach whatever point in history that Kathleen chose. Jack was truly an extraordinary husband. His one annoying fault was hating green beans.
Visitation will be held at St. Margaret Mary Church on Thursday, May 1st from 4:00-6:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Margaret Mary's Church on Friday, May 2nd at 11:00 a.m. A private burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Catholic Charities Food Bank.
