Joanna Marie Binion Stratten

Joanna Marie Binion Stratten, age 80, of Terre Haute, Indiana, passed away peacefully surrounded by her daughters on September 20, 2026, following a long battle with kidney disease.

Joanna was born to Dozier Binion and Mary (Reynolds) Binion in Newcastle, Indiana, on January 24, 1946. The youngest of five children, she lost her father at a young age and was raised by her tenacious mother thereafter. Joanna was the last survivor of her immediate family, preceded in death by her sister Diane Carter and brothers David, Steve, and Richard.

Joanna was a strong, beautiful, proud woman who managed to raise seven children despite life’s craziness. She was a devoted mother, nurse, painter, homemaker, reader, and friend. She took joy in visiting with her children, grandchildren and friends, caring for her pets, reading a good novel, painting, tending her garden, and caring for her home. She water skied and played guitar in her youth and took up painting in her retirement, producing treasured watercolors that hang on the walls of her children’s homes.

Joanna was a registered nurse who cared for patients for decades at Terre Haute’s Union Hospital before a well-deserved retirement. She was married for 20 years, but lived the second half of her life as an independent woman. She lived in Indiana, Utah, Connecticut, and North Carolina, spending most of her life in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Joanna is survived by her seven children and their partners, Eric Layton (Meagan), Kimberly Dawn, Aaron Christopher (Julee), Daniel Bryce (Jennifer), Joshua Graves, Deborah Janelle (Bobby), and Leshia Diane (Brian), her nine grandchildren and their partners, Kai (Christina), Brant (Jodi), Maddy, Cole, Kaylee (Megan), Jack, Rylan, Jonah, and Mary and her two great-grandchildren, Loona and Finn.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to your local humane society.
