Gail Edward Morgan, 87, of Terre Haute, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at Harrison’s Crossings Health Campus. He was born on November 23, 1937, in Noblesville, to Russell and Vera (Sutton) Morgan. He married Nancy Bishop on December 16, 1962.
Gail is survived by his wife of nearly 63 years, Nancy Morgan of Terre Haute; children: Brad Morgan (Vickie) of Terre Haute; Brenda Cowell (Mark) of Otsego, MI; and Beth Chaney (Erin) of Lexington, SC; grandchildren: Jessica White (Alex) of Indianapolis; Josh Morgan of Terre Haute; Reilly Morgan of Terre Haute; Will Cowell (Marissa) of Chicago; Sean Cowell of Grand Rapids, MI; Asa Cowell of Otsego, MI; Andrew Chaney of Chicago; Hannah Chaney of Lexington, SC; and Caleb Chaney of Clearfield, UT; great grandchildren: Danny Cowell of Chicago and Baby Girl White on the way; and special cousins, Ernie McNew of Terre Haute; and Grace Selkow Pettijohn of Queens, NY.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ronald Morgan.
Gail proudly served in the United States Air Force and Indiana Air National Guard as a fighter pilot, earning the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before his retirement. He attended classes at Purdue University, graduated from flight school, and Air War College. His military career accomplishments were nothing compared to the joy that being a Pawpaw brought him. Gail’s family was his greatest achievement. He could always be found cheering on his grandchildren. He traveled all over the country to support them at their band performances and athletic events, encouraging them to pursue their love of music and sports.
Gail always stood up for what was right, no matter how difficult the path. He cared for and protected others – family, friends, and colleagues alike. Quiet in nature, he had a sharp sense of humor, which he had to have for survival considering the fun-loving family he raised alongside his wife, Nancy. He enjoyed the simple things in life from the daily crossword puzzles, sudoku, and woodworking projects that showcased his attention to every detail. He had a relationship with Jesus and was a longtime member of First Baptist Church, even serving on the Deacons Board. Gail will forever be remembered for being a wonderful husband, father, and Pawpaw. He fought his battle with Parkinson’s with courage and dignity.
Gail’s family wishes to thank the staff at Harrison’s Crossings Health Campus, Hospice of the Wabash Valley/VNA, and Dr. Vuppala Reddy for their compassionate care and kindness.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at First Baptist Church. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Happy Tails Animal Rescue, 16975 S. Truman St., Farmersburg, IN 47850.
