Elizabeth Jean “Betty” McCabe, 89, of Terre Haute passed away Sunday morning, December 26, 2021. She was born November 19, 1932 in Terre Haute to John Evans and Catherine DeLoughery Evans. She married her husband, William McCabe, on September 15, 1956, and he preceded her in death in 2003.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Jim Pennington of Terre Haute; two grandchildren, Jimmy Pennington (Elizabeth) and Katie White (Trae); four great-grandchildren, James Pennington, Joseph Pennington and Andrew Pennington (expected in February), and Adalynn White and Trace White; two brothers-in-law, Robert Bibb and Allen Gayler; two sisters-in-law, Mary Lou Evans and Roberta McCabe; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by a brother, John A. Evans; three sisters, Katherine Szakovits, Mary Ann Bibb and Margaret “Peggy” Gayler; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ed and Edwina McCabe; and brothers-in-law, James McCabe and Joseph Szakovits.
Betty was a graduate of Gerstmeyer High School and was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church. During her lifetime, she worked at JC Penney’s and Wolfe’s Auto Auction as an office manager and bookkeeper. She also volunteered at St. Benedict’s Church as a money counter for 17 years. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, hosting family gatherings and her weekly breakfasts with her niece, Susan Fuson. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 12:00 PM, Thursday, December 30, 2021 in St. Benedict Catholic Church, 111 South 9 th Street, with Father Martin Day, OFM Conv. officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled prior to services on Thursday from 11:00 AM -12:00 Noon in the church. If friends should so desire, memorial contributions may be made to St. Benedict Catholic Church, 111 South 9 th Street, Terre Haute, IN 47807.
