Richard Smith Mayrose, 82, of Terre Haute, passed peacefully Monday afternoon, December 4th, 2023, in The Gibson Family Center for Hospice Care unit with his family surrounding him. Richard was born November 19th, 1941, at Union Hospital to Richard Alfred Mayrose and Anna Mildred Smith Mayrose. Richard, known to many as Rich or Dick, is survived by his wife of 33 years, Cara Wilson Mayrose, daughter Carly Joanna Mayrose, sons Dale Richard (Kim) Mayrose, and their children, Alyssa Carr Mayrose and Adam Charles Mayrose and Robert Wayne (Kristy) Mayrose and their children Titus Richard Mayrose and Samantha Louise Mayrose, sister Louise Mayrose Cadick, nephew Ross Joseph (Amber) Cadick and great nephews Benjamin Thomas Cadick and Clark Richard Cadick, niece Anna Malinda (David) Cadick Coyne, great niece Eleanor Louise Coyne and great nephews David Alex Coyne and Carson Wayne Coyne; his first cousin Dale Hudson and his family, and his Father-In-Law Joseph Wilson. Rich was preceded in his death by his parents, Richard and Anna Mayrose, and his Mother-In-Law, Maxine Wilson.
Richard was raised in Terre Haute and was a 1959 Garfield High School graduate. He earned his doctorate from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1967; he completed his Family Medicine Residency at Saint Joseph Medical Center in South Bend. Richard was proud to serve in the United States Air Force from 1970 to 1972. Dr. Mayrose defined his life by serving the Wabash Valley and Union Health in many facets, including as Assistant Director of the Union Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program, Chief of Staff, Chief of Family Practice, and recipient of the Weinbaum Award in 1999. Doc retired in 2021 after more than five decades in the medical field. Dick was an avid golfer; he enjoyed playing with colleagues for weekly rounds and traveling to various international courses; he especially relished playing in Scotland. He enjoyed competing in tennis tournaments alongside his wife, Cara. Dick loved watching sports, particularly a passionate fan of IU basketball, the St. Louis Cardinals, and The Indianapolis Colts. He was a long-standing member of the Country Club of Terre Haute, the Terre Haute Elks Club, and the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dick was a man of faith; He was a member of First Baptist and, formerly, Maple Avenue Church. Rich was a true family man; Richard's father was the youngest of 13 children, and he enjoyed traditional Holidays spent with his extended family and cared for many of the cousins as their physician. Additionally, he enjoyed vacations with Cara and Carly and took his sons and family to the ballpark to watch the St. Louis Cardinals every summer. Dick spent his downtime listening to varied music and playing cards.
Friends are invited to join the family for A Celebration of Richard's Life that will occur on Saturday, January 13th, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Sycamore Country Club, 200 Heritage Drive, Terre Haute, IN 47803. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Richard Mayrose, M.D., Memorial Scholarship Fund at Union Health Foundation.
