Dr. Daniel Joseph Bedecki

We, the family of Dr. Daniel Joseph Bedecki, 71, of Terre Haute, Indiana, regret to announce his passing on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at home, surrounded by family, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada, to the late Daniel Alexander Bedecki and Rita Gertrude (McQueen) Bedecki.

Dr. Dan is survived by two sons, Alex Bedecki (Kateri) and Ryan Bedecki; grandchildren, Rian Bedecki, Nori Bedecki, and Max Engles; brothers, Jerry Bedecki (Kim), Kenny Bedecki (Patti), and Bobby Bedecki (Tasha); sisters, Marie Bedecki, Kim Bedecki, and Paula Bedecki-Windsor (Bill); and several nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his parents, his children's mother, Constance Morton, and his sister-in-law, Lynda Bedecki.

Upon completion of high school, Dr. Dan continued his studies at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, before attending Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he earned his medical degree. He began his career in Loogootee, IN, then to West Virginia, and later settled in Terre Haute, where he practiced family medicine for over 25 years. During a portion of that period, he served as Chief of Staff at Terre Haute Regional Hospital. Upon retirement, Dr. Dan shared his knowledge and experience as an instructor at Indiana University Medical School, Landsbaum Center.

Dr. Dan had a sharp mind and a thirst for knowledge. He had a wide variety of interests: medicine, sports, race cars, planes, history, and travel, and he would read and learn about them until he understood every detail. Dr. Dan was a proud member of the Zorah Shrine, where he served as treasurer; the Jesters; the Scottish Rite; the York Rite; and the Masonic Lodge #86 F & AM. He was a Member of the Strawberry Hill Cannoneers.

For those who were fortunate enough to know Dr. Dan, you know that he was a wonderful doctor who cared about his patients. He was a kind man who loved life, and he lived it to the fullest. He forged deep ties with his medical school classmates and kept in close contact through annual ski, sailing, and golf trips for 50 years. He considered himself very lucky to be welcomed into the Burkle family when he arrived in Terre Haute. Carol was like his second mom and remained a true friend for many years. He will be greatly missed by his companion Danielle Trout and close friend Al Gross.

Family was very important to Dr. Dan. He was very proud of both sons and enjoyed every minute spent with his grandchildren. Dr. Dan loved to return to Cape Breton to visit family. His absence at family gatherings and celebrations will be felt by everyone, but we take comfort in knowing that he will be with us in spirit.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th Street, on Thursday, September 24, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., with Masonic Service at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 1807 Popular Street, on Friday, September 25, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., with visitation at the church one hour before the Mass.

A reception will be held following the service at the Zorah Shrine, 420 N. 7th Street.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children. The family wishes to extend their gratitude and special thanks to all of the medical professionals for their compassionate care, kindness, and support throughout Dr. Bedecki’s illness.
