Colonel Dennis Eugene Fields, 70, of Dumfries, VA, and formerly of Terre Haute, passed away on Monday, October 13, 2025. He was born on July 28, 1955, in Terre Haute, to John Eugene Fields and Nancy Lee Rees Smith.
Dennis is survived by his daughter, Lauren Moriarty (Matthew) of Jamestown, RI; grandchildren: Makenzie, lzabella, and Gracen Moriarty; previous wife, Cynthia Fields; brother, Steve Fields (Elizabeth); sister, Jolie Gillespie (Richard); and other surviving family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Martin Fields; and a son, Jonathan Fields.
Dennis was a 1973 graduate of Paul Schulte High School, Indiana State University Undergraduate and Master’s degrees as well as the Command and General Staff College and the Army War College. He honorably served, becoming a decorated, successful, respected soldier. As an officer, he took great pride in becoming a highly trained paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division and earning Jump Master. He was the 8th Finance Battalion Commander in Baumholder, Germany and took pride in taking care of his soldiers and their families while stationed overseas. Dennis proudly served in the United States Army from 1978 to 2004, retiring with the rank of Colonel from the Pentagon in Arlington, VA. His interest in a military career began in the Army ROTC at Indiana State University and he was commissioned as an officer at graduation.
He devoted his life to giving service to God, his Country, and his Family.
A Catholic Mass of Christian Burial will take place at noon on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at St. Joseph University Parish. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until noon on Saturday, at the church. Dennis will be laid to rest in Roselawn Memorial Park with military honors rendered by the United States Army and VFW Post 972. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Dennis’ memory to the Disabled American Veterans and note your gift in his name.
