Carol Ann Hawn, a dedicated community leader and cherished resident of Terre Haute, Indiana, passed away at home on Friday, January 9, 2025, at the age of 78. Born on July 17, 1947, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Carol devoted her life to fostering community spirit and serving others through decades of work as a professional critical care nurse, as well as through her volunteerism and civic engagement.
Carol was a dedicated healthcare professional who graduated from Chaffey College in Ontario, California, earning her Registered Nurse (RN) degree. She later obtained her Master of Science degree from the University of Phoenix. After retiring from nursing, she became well known for her deep commitment to the Terre Haute community, where she was a respected and valued leader. A natural organizer, Carol served in numerous leadership roles and was instrumental in coordinating signature events such as the annual International Day and Extension Craft Day. Her contributions were formally recognized in 2011 when she was named Vigo County Extension Homemaker of the Year, an honor reflecting her tireless advocacy for the domestic arts, education, and community fellowship. She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Terre Haute.
Beyond her organizational leadership, Carol was a hands-on philanthropist with a generous heart. Her service touched many lives throughout the Wabash Valley. She led and participated in efforts ranging from sewing Christmas stockings for patients at Union Hospital to organizing donation drives benefiting the Lighthouse Mission. Carol’s love of crafts was always paired with purpose, and she frequently hosted silent auctions to raise funds for local charitable organizations.
At the center of Carol’s life was her family. She shared a long and devoted marriage with her husband, Larry Lane Hawn, and together they made their home on East Chandler Avenue a place of warmth, welcome, and hospitality. She was a proud and loving mother to Brett Lee Hawn and doted on her three grandchildren, […]. She is also survived by her sister Gail Godown, and brother Lee Godown.
Carol leaves behind a legacy defined by kindness, organization, and service to others, along with a deep belief that small acts of care - whether a handmade gift or a carefully coordinated event - can strengthen the fabric of a community. She will be deeply missed by her family, her fellow Extension Homemakers, and the many lives she brightened in Terre Haute.
