Anthony “Tony” Alan Gibbs, 84, was born February 22, 1939 in Cayuga, Indiana to Marshall and Annabelle Gibbs. He graduated from Cayuga High School and earned his Eagle Scout, the first in Vermillion County, He was also awarded the Arrow Vigil Honor and served as the Portland Arch Boy Scout Summer Camp Director for 3 years.
Tony graduated from Indiana State University with a Social Studies degree in teaching and earned a Masters in Social Science education. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Tony served in the United States Army Reserves 604th MP as a Chief Warrant Officer from 1962 until Honorably Discharged in 1975.
Tony taught in Angola and Danville, IL and was principal in Attica, Indiana, before taking the role of Assistant Professor of Social Studies at St. Mary of the Woods College. He served as a Department Chair as well as being an original Director of the Women’s External Degree program (W.E.D.). Tony spent 17 years teaching at Washington Alternative School before retiring in 2003.
Tony is survived by his wife of nearly 61 years, Linda Liehr, who he married on December 29, 1962, his daughter Michele (Edward) Kirby, his granddaughters, Katie (Alex) Poole of Terre Haute and Ellen Kirby of Santa Monica, California and one great-granddaughter, Emma Kate Poole.
A private celebration of life with immediate family will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Washington Alternative School to assist students with caps and gowns or to the Cayuga Presbyterian Church.
