Obituary for Ann Rutledge Hartman

Ann Rutledge Hartman, 96, of Terre Haute, IN passed away on November 28, 2018. Ann was known for her love of family and friends and sense of style. Ann was born in Fort Dodge, IA on September 29, 1922 to Mabel M. and Reyburn L. Rutledge. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Otto John Hartman; and sisters Jean Lawhon and Mary Butzier. Survivors include sister Alice McKinney; daughters Leslie Knapp (Keith Anderson) and Elizabeth Krantz (Bruce); son Martin Hartman (Beverly); grandchildren Jessica Callahan (Andy), Jennifer Lightner (Konrad), Elizabeth Rock (Sean), Jonathan Knapp (Nora), Michael and Brandon Hartman; and great-grandsons Korban and Hudson Lightner.
Ann studied Architectural Engineering at Iowa State University and Fine Arts and Interior Design at the Chicago Art Institute. Following her studies, Ann launched a lifelong career in interior design at Mandel Brothers Department Store in Chicago, IL. In 1952, Ann married Otto in Barrington, IL and their careers brought them to Terre Haute, IN in 1953. In 1972, Ann and Otto started a design studio, Interior Arts and Gallery House, which was active for 35 years. The studio was sold following Otto’s death in 1993, but Ann continued to work in interior design until her mid-90s. Ann was an artist and had exhibited in several galleries. Other interests included the First Congregational Church, P.E.O. Sisterhood since 1943, Tri Kappa Sorority, Union Hospital Women’s Service League, T.O.B.I.E.S., and Swope Art Museum Board and Collection Committee. Ann served on the Art and Marketing Committees at Westminster Village where she resided. During Ann’s design career, she had received award recognitions for her work, including the Chicago Tribune annual “Better Designs” award two years and was listed in Who’s Who of American Women. Her favorite interests included her close-knit family; wonderful friends; her design and art work; music; and an active life that included volunteering.
Visitation will be from 1:00 to 3:00 pm on Monday December 3, 2018 followed by a service at 3:00 pm at the Callahan Hughes Funeral Home at 605 South 25th St, Terre Haute. The family suggests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the First Congregational Church, 630 Ohio St., Terre Haute, IN 47807; The Swope Art Museum, 25 South 7th Street, Terre Haute, IN 47807; SouthernCare Hospice Services, 4624 S. Springhill Junction Street, Terre Haute, IN 47802 or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
